Current issues

Reference the discussion in class Wednesday. The Democrats have had issues with the profits in the oil industry and the Republican sponsored tax measures for said oil companies. The Democrats, now that they are in the majority, have acted on those concerns .

Democrats believe that they are removing unfair tax advantages for a very successful industry. Republicans see the Democratic move as a tax increase. In three hundred words, try to convince your reader (me), which is the case and why. Six trait scoring on conventions, ideas, and organization.

Journalistic ethics

go to

then create a scenario where you’d ( you are a reporter) need to protect sources. Post the scenario at rdavis@district 70.org

You may have to do a little research on the shield law, but if you read the whole article, I think you’ll understand

Who wants to talk about The Cask of Amontillado?

October 16th, 2006 by raydavis in Uncategorized · 53 Comments

This is a vocabulary dense story, but it has some of the scariest one liners I have ever come across. Read slowly…let the full impact of the imagery sink in. Ask questions here. I will answer as often as possible!

Happy Columbus Day

October 8th, 2006 by raydavis in colleagues · 2 Comments

Hola educators,

And welcome to Monday. Today we are going to take time to utilize some Alpine Achievement data. You probably already know how to do what I am going to demo, so I’ll not take anymore time than necessary.

The goal today is to create a functional list, in Excel,  of students, with whom you have contact, to assess their assessment, in an area where you can have an effect (phew).  For example, I am very interested in the reading and writing performance, which is generally what I teach. But I also can impact reading and writing in art class. So as an art teacher, I am interested in boosting the reading/writing in the content area, so I should know how well my art kids read and write.

Phys Ed might have some interest in numeracy (did I use that term correctly?), when dealing with performance times, per cent improvement, heart rates, BMI, etc., in addition to reading and writing in the content area, so those teacher should have interest in how well their students perform in relevant areas.

I can find all the data  I need to at www.alpineachievement.com/

But when I go to the Alpine site, where should I go? That is what I will demo. Obviously, if you already have done this exercise, then you can use this time to look at the data, or compare student CSAP to classroom performance.

At the end of the day, send an email to Rick and Ray with your useful, modified Excel spreadsheet.

Now onto the demo:

Login to Alpine either through the Intranet page or www.alpineachievement.com/
Enter user/pass…After you click log in, (and after that command processes), you will be at the User’s Center page.
Select CSAP System, located on the right hand side of the page…click
(After that command processes) this will take you to CSAP System Home.

Find the Change View To selector in the middle of the page, and use the pulldown arrow to choose All Students (Current School and Grade)…and click the Update button to the right.
(After that command processes), scroll down to Student Spreadsheets and click on
 Student Summary (across content areas)

You should be looking at the three grade levels and the number of students in each. Click on a level that might show a bunch of kids you have.

Wow, this opens a massive spreadsheet, pretty unmanageable. To simplify it:

Click ctrl a

Then ctrl c

Then minimize everything and open a new Excel spreadsheet

Then ctrl v

Now you can close everything except the spreadsheet you just created.

Go to File > Edit; Save As, and give it a new name.

Then click on any cell to get a white, (deselected) spreadsheet.

Now, look at the top row of numbers on your Excel spreadsheet…Click on the number 3. That action highlights column 3. Then hit the delete key…All gone!

Click on number 4. That action highlights column 4. Then hit the delete key…All gone!

This time, click on column 5 and go to the Edit menu at the top. When you click delete, the whole column goes away (FUN).

Okay, to make a long story short, you can whittle this unwieldy spreadsheet down to size by highlighting and deleting until you get the evidence you think is necessary for the students you teach.

When you are done, as I said above email to Rick and Ray. Thanx

PS.  Technical writing may not be my strong suit. Post any recommendations to the blog. I’d appreciate it.

Process paper “How to wash your Hands”

October 4th, 2006 by raydavis in English 1 · 12 Comments

Germs and viruses-They are everywhere. And I’m okay with that, as long as they stay out of my body and leave me alone. The problem is that occasionally they come my way, usually because I rub my eyes or (ahem) scratch my nose.

And since I can’t seem to not rub my eyes or (ahem) scratch my nose, my only real defense to keep the micro critters out of my life is with frequent hand washing. Your assignment is to write me a process (how to) paper on handwashing. The ONLY details I am interested in hearing is from the approach to the sink on…Kapish?

Six trait…Ideas and conventions. Standard #2

Post your answers at rdavis@district70.org

Good luck

Two readings…

September 20th, 2006 by raydavis in journalism · 7 Comments

Go to http://www.pueblochieftain.com/metro/1158759434/1

for a read concerning another local ballot question. And of local interest

go to http://www.pueblochieftain.com/metro/1158759434/5

Your assignment is to read the second article, and give a one paragraph response to the claims and counterclaims made. Send to my email account :rdavis@district70.org

I would like to encourage all of you, to revisit the last posting…The goal is to foster crtitical thinking. Many of your reponses do not achieve that.

When I ask, “How are the two articles related? (Hint: Stay focussed on taxes.) Keep answer fifty words or less.”

the answer IS NOT, “they both talk about taxes.”

I’ll give you an opportunity to re-post, but please dig a little deeper for a more thoughtful answer!
